Carlos Suarez is Trinidad and Tobago’s lone representative in the boxing tournament at the 2012 London Olympics.
Nineteen-year-old Suarez is among 26 boxers listed for action in the light flyweight division. The field also includes Jantony Ortiz, the Puerto Rican who whipped Suarez 23-4 in the semifinal round at the Olympic Qualifiers Of The Americas, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in May.
It may not have seemed so at the time, but Suarez was fortunate to have fought Ortiz in the semis. Ortiz’s victory in the final meant that Suarez finished third, and was handed the final Olympic qualifying light flyweight spot up for grabs at the tournament, the American-born T&T boxer benefitting from the luck of the draw.
