It remains a treasured and iconic moment in our country's history said Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee(TTOC)President Larry Romany.
Romany was commenting on the fact that on Monday 24Th July it will be thirty years since Hasely Crawford stunned the sporting world when he won the Gold medal in the 100 m sprint at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.
Despite the African Boycott 92 countries and 6084 athletes participated in 21 sports .The city of Montreal hosted the world's premier sporting event from 17 July to 1st August that year.
On July 24 ,26 year-old CRAWFORD became the fastest man on earth and earned for Trinidad and Tobago,its first and still,30 years later only Olympic Gold medal.
"In my view nothing so far beats it.The Olympic games is the pinnacle.To win an Olympic Gold medal is the supreme test of Character, heart, mind and soul. Hasely is a symbol of excellence and the full potential of T&T as a nation" said TTOC Secretary General Brian Lewis
"Hasely is an example to the youth of the nation .His feat has stood the test of time.The fact that 30 years on we are still to repeat says it all.An Olympic Gold medal does not come easy.Hasely is a National hero the passage of time will never diminish his achievement"added Romany.
